The Steven (Stiffy) Williamson Memorial Trophy 2008 This year’s winners , after a very exciting final against Corpusty, were Lyng Utd, making it three years in a row.
This year’s player of the year was Kester Wiseman of Foulsham F.C.
The presentation night was well supported and again records were broken.
We received donations from Lyng Utd F.C. £75
Corpusty F.C. £110
Walcis Park Sporting Club £266
Others £70
Our Raffle raised £687
and our Quiz raised £50
Together with Barbara & Ernie’s Diamond Wedding Anniversary which raised £750, our grand total was £2.008.
Added to last year’s total of £5,265 we have now raised £7,273 for the Children’s Fund at the N & N.
Many thanks to all of you who donated raffle prizes and everyone who helped in so many other ways.
See you all next year.
The Williamson family.
Thank you. Sandi and Robin Taylor would like to thank all of you who wrote to us whilst we were away following the sudden death of Sandi’s father in Scotland. It was very comforting to hear from our friends back home and we much appreciated it. Thank you.
Sandi & Robin Taylor
Try something new! Do you sometimes just want to do something for its own sake, to be creative and constructive and think your own ideas through, without everyday chores demanding all your energy?
Perhaps you, like so many people I talk to, have always wanted to learn to draw and paint, so why not make this the year you fulfil that wish.
I run Art Courses where the emphasis is on positive learning, and I teach skills and techniques, in fact I try to de-mystify the whole world of Art so that as the term progresses you will learn how to handle various materials, and practise thinking through ideas and turning them into something new and visually exciting. You will also learn a little about artists, and their work in the past which has done so much to shape our thinking and our way of looking at the world.
Classes are good fun, friendly and supportive. Beginners are welcome as are those who have some experience and want to learn more.
Classes are established at Cawston, Marsham, Hempton, Hindolveston, Sheringham and Cromer, and restart in September. For details ring me on 01603 872441.

SPARHAM OPEN GARDENS on Sunday 13th July 2008
The afternoon was blessed with fine weather which brought visitors from far and wide to view the 13 beautiful gardens open in Sparham Delicious teas were enjoyed at several gardens which offered stunning views overlooking the surrounding countryside. Children were entertained with pond dipping and a treasure hunt. The cake and plant stalls, tombola and art exhibition also proved popular. The event would not have been the success it was without the huge amount of effort and generosity from so many in the village. Thank you to gardeners, cake makers, advertisers, volunteers, benefactors and visitors alike, your support was much appreciated.
Just over £ 2000 was raised in aid of the parish church of St. Mary The Virgin, Sparham.

PLOUGHING MATCHES
September brings the start of the Ploughing Matches. Steve Framingham will be busy taking part in many matches, either ploughing or judging, through until the New Year.
He hopes to plough in the Holt match later this month and in the Norfolk Ploughing Society match in October. In early October he plans to plough at Rougham in Cambridgeshire, to try and qualify for the British Nationals in Lincolnshire in 2009. Also in October he will travel to Kent to take part in the 2008 British Nationals. He came 6th in his class near York in the 2007 British Nationals.
On October 25th he will be ploughing on the Royal Estate at Sandringham in a match organised in conjunction with the British Hedge Laying Competition. It will be a busy weekend for him and his family as their own Bawdeswell Ploughing Society match takes place the following day on the Bawdeswell Farms estate by kind permission of the Gurney family. This match should have taken place last January and had to be put of twice because of the heavy rains. The land is alongside the Billingford to Bawdeswell road at the top of the hill this side of Billingford. All those ploughmen who had booked to plough last January are now being contacted and several who will have ploughed at Sandringham are staying on to take part as well. A Raffle will be held on the day, the proceeds will be given to a Travel Fund, set up to help those ploughmen with their travel expenses who qualify at the British Nationals to represent England if they have to travel overseas to take part in either The World or European Championships next year.
Spectators will be made welcome to see the skills of these ploughmen on Sunday October 26th. Ploughing starts at 10am. Ruby Framingham
BOOK CLUB - Book review
F Scott Fitzgerald – ‘The Great Gatsby’
The Great Gatsby is an iconic novel that captures the essence of post-first world war American society. It is a tale of Gatsby’s obsessive love for Daisy and the lengths to which he is prepared to go to follow his dream.
The story narrated by Nick Carraway, who has just moved to West Egg, next to Gatsby’s large mansion, largely revolves around Jay Gatsby and his relations with Tom and Daisy Buchanan. The rich upper class characters appear to be living out the American dream but in a society that is shallow and unfeeling. It is a tragic tale that has strong characters all of whom appear to be living an illusion.
Members of the book club found it hard to like or identify with any of the characters. . However it is a short book and very easy to read, the story flows easily and Scott Fitzgerald’s style of writing is entertaining, articulate and descriptive.
The book club meets on the first Thursday of each month at the Old Workhouse Bar. New members are always welcome - you don’t have to buy lots of books as the majority of our books are loaned from Norfolk Library. Our book next month will be The Trumpet Major by Thomas Hardy
Linda Rose

THE BECK WI
In Aleathia's absence, Jennifer opened the meeting. She welcomed and introduced our speaker, Frances Middleton, who then began her illustrated talk - Aboriginal Australia.
The first slides were of the wonderful Sydney Harbour and Bridge and the group she was with met their first aboriginal inhabitants. She was most impressed by stories of their very different way of life, their culture, generosity and caring attitude. The group, with their guide, then moved out to Central Australia, which meant Alice Springs and of course, Ayers Rock (Sorry! I mean Uluru as it is now referred to). Frances had many slides showing different angles of the rock formation that is Uluru and of the attractive trees growing in really red soil. Altogether, a very different and fascinating picture of Australia.
The exhibit, a postcard, was won by Jennifer. 2nd - Mary. the raffle was won by Mary.
The speaker next month - Monday 13th October - will be Richard Watts on 'My Uncle Frank - Memories of a Norfolk Life'. Please note - this talk is followed by our Annual Meeting, previously scheduled for the November meeting. The exhibit for October is a Typically Norfolk souvenir.

REEPHAM & DISTRICT ROTARY Club members had a very busy weekend at the Aylsham Show organizing the Art tent. They raised in the region of £2600 which will be dedicated to the Reepham Rotary Charities.
The club has presented the Reepham Responders with a GPS satellite navigation system. It is something that the group needed to improve their response time.
The former president of the club Dave Joice, recently told stories of ‘Old Parker’ at Bawdeswell Garden Centre and the club decided to donate £200 to his chosen charity Multiple Sclerosis.
Michael Jones recently organized a bowls evening at The Roundwood, Taverham. Members and wives had an enjoyable evening, some never having bowled before.
Local lad Jake Richardson came and gave a talk on his skiing career, which he hopes to develop in the USA in the forthcoming year. He has to raise considerable funds to assist him and the club decided to donate him £200 towards his expenses.
The next event the club is organizing is an ‘Elvis’ evening, which will take place at the High School on Saturday 27th September.

FOXLEY PARISH COUNCIL – EXTRACT OF MINUTES FOR MEETING HELD ON 15 JULY 2008 AT 7.30PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL
Present: Councillors Harvey, Mears, Hatch. Barrett, Mrs I Floering Blackman, Mr G Bambridge, M White, C Boer and 6 parishioners
Minutes of last Meeting: Agreed and signed
Matters Arising
Appointment of New Clerk – Mrs C Boer was appointed as new clerk.
Anglian Water and the Village Hall – PC are awaiting formal plans from AW, once received a village meeting will be arranged to discuss this proposal with
attendance from AW reps. It was felt that if the sale of this land was not agreed then AW could use their mandate for compulsory purchase. Chairman therefore put to the PC a proposal to sell the land at the best
price to AW remaining councillors were in agreement.
Emergency Plan – Clerk confirmed the draft Emergency Plan had been circulated to the PC for comments. Chairman agreed to be Emergency Coordinator for West Foxley, Councillor Barrett agreed to be Emergency Coordinator for East Foxley. To be finalised at the next PC meeting.
Correspondence
LDF and Site Specifics Document – Foxley has 6 potential development sites which are currently classed as unreasonable. The PC’s perspective is the village does not merit any further housing development in the future, so therefore the PC agrees with this decision. Although the proposal is for smaller villages to have their Settlement Boundary removed, the PC’s opinion is to retain the Settlement Boundary for Foxley.
Boundary Committee Draft Proposal – The PC had not received all data in order to discuss the proposal in full; however, it was felt that this proposal could have major adverse consequences on the workload of town and parish councils, loss of democracy and on the taxes of Breckland residents. PC to discuss at Sept meeting and make final comments before 26th Sept.
Planning
Vine Cottage PA erection of new detached garage PP granted with conditions
Fox Hollow PA side and rear extension PP granted with conditions.
Manor Farm courtesy application for the erection of a steel framed agricultural building – no objections.
Church Farm Barns – Foxley Gallery – PC’s opinion is the exit is too near to the junction and would require the current location of the village bench to be relocated; however the PC had not been approached regarding this. PC not against the proposal but wants to ensure that all aspects of the proposal are done correctly.
Moor Farm – proposed agricultural storage building – no objections, condition included re landscaping.
Flora Nova – following the deadline for comments in connection with this PA the PC had received a letter from a parishioner with concerns this forwarded to Breckland Council. PC would like to see precise details of means of surface water disposal.
Village Matters
Overgrown grass banks on the paths of Old Fakenham Road and the path from Foxley to Bawdeswell, Highways to be contacted.
PC to contact Environmental Health regarding continued concerns about sewerage in Foxley East.
The PC presented Meg White with farewell gifts to mark her excellent support to the PC during what was supposed to be a short time until a new Clerk was found but ended up being 5 years!
DATE OF NEXT MEETING THURSDAY 11 SEPTEMBER 2008 AT 7.30PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL
BAWDESWELL PARISH COUNCIL – EXTRACT OF MINUTES - MEETING HELD ON 1 SEPTEMBER 2008 AT 7.45PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL
Present: Councillors Shannon, Mason, Beane, Mallen, Mr G Bambridge,
C Boer and 2 parishioners
Apologies: Councillors Lilwall and Cockburn
Matters Arising not Covered Elsewhere on Agenda
Local Development Framework & Draft Site Specifics Document – PC had been made aware that the landowner of Site Specific No: (004/003) had resubmitted the plan to BC for a single residence and not multiple dwellings. In absence of any further request from BC (Breckland Council) the PC were not in a position to reflect any change of view regarding this site. PC formal response on the above document agreed and to be forwarded to BC before 26 Sept.
Boundary Committee Proposal for One Unitary Authority – It was agreed that the PC should offer a consensus view which reflected concerns that the draft proposal did not meet the 5 criteria set for a unitary authority and in the absence of detailed arguments by the Boundary Committee it was difficult to make a sensible cost benefit analysis of the draft proposal versus the current two tier local government system.
Community Car Scheme – The Breckland officials’ discussion paper due to be discussed in a forthcoming meeting at BC. Clerk commissioned to contact BC after this meeting to confirm that a Breckland official would be able to attend the Nov PC meeting to discuss the scheme, and also to invite the coordinators of current C.C.S. in neighbouring villages.
NCC- Transport Questionnaire – PC agreed in principle to support the possible incorporation of Bawdeswell into the Flexi-Bus Dial-A-Ride system, even though it was attempting, in parallel to set up the C.C.S. However, both systems would depend heavily on the perceived needs of the village, therefore agreed a transport questionnaire is distributed to all parishioners to ascertain this.
Highways Outstanding Work – Still awaiting date for connection of the speed reactive sign on Norwich Rd. The deer warning sign on Reepham Rd and the missing bollard at the end of Old Reepham Rd should be completed within next 2 weeks. The loose 20mph in The Street and the missing ‘Village Only’ sign on the A1067 are to be inspected by NCC in near future.
Old Surveyors Land – The sealed bid closed and the higher of the 2 bids received accepted. The land sale now being progressed through solicitors.
Community Speedwatch Scheme – Following growing concerns about the speed of motorists within the village, the PC have agreed to support the introduction of the Community Speedwatch Scheme, providing the required support from residents is found.
Car Parking on Pavement in the Village – In response to the many concerns expressed about residents parking cars on pavements and verges around the village, the Police had confirmed that they would take action against the owners of cars causing any obstruction to pedestrians.
Overgrown Verge Hall Rd/Paradise Rd – This overgrown verge has been cut as requested, but it had since been reported that residents adjacent this area had been dumping hedge cuttings etc on this land. Residents should be aware that this could be classed as illegal fly-tipping.
Planning
Robinia House – PA for Extensions – no objections
House Conversion Next to McColls – No PA received. Clerk confirmed that a letter had been sent to BC to investigate.
Lodge Plantation, Dereham Rd – 3PL/2007/1511/F concerns raised relating to access gate – condition 5 of PP. Still awaiting response from BC.
Air Conditioning Units McColls – 3PL/2007/0495/F concerns raised relating to positioning of air conditioning units, condition 5 of PP. Still awaiting response from BC.
Clerks Report
Common Lane Sign – NCC confirmed that the sign recently put up at the end of Common Lane is compliant, as this is a restricted byway with only walkers, cyclists, horses/rider and horse and cart permitted to use the Lane. No motorised vehicles are permitted.
Post Office – Mr Rolfe from Post Office Ltd was hopeful that he might have found a willing sub-postmaster from a neighbouring village to take on the outreach services of Bawdeswell of two 3hr morning sessions each week, but this would not be confirmed until mid-Sept.
Any Other Business
Project Bawdeswell – to be invited to provide an update for next PC meeting.
Breckland Policy Development & Review Panel Meeting on LDF Core Strategy – Chairman had attended this meeting as an observer. Breckland officials defended the PC position that Bawdeswell should not be designated as any LSC.

How to recognise a scam – is it too good to be true?
There are hundreds of types of scams – fake lotteries and prize draws, fake investment plans, work from home schemes.
How scam artists succeed – they will:
■ contact you, without you asking them to, by phone, email, post or in person
■ sound pleasant, well spoken and kind and want you to think they’re your friend
■ have slick, professional leaflets and letters
■ be persistent and persuasive
■ rush you into making a decision
■ ask you to send money before you receive their tempting offer or win
They offer you something for nothing – such as:
■ you’ve won a prize in a draw or a lottery (even though you haven’t entered one)
■ an exclusive entry to a scheme that’s a surefire way to make money
■ a way to earn easy money by helping them get untold millions out of their country
■ the chance to join an investment scheme that will make you huge amounts of money; and so on.
They’ll ask you to:
■ send money up front – an administration fee or tax, the list is endless but its always a ruse to get you to give them money
■ give them your bank details or other personal details
■ ring a premium rate number (all UK premium rate numbers start with 090)
■ buy something to get your prize
We can all protect ourselves by being sceptical. Is it likely that someone you don’t know, who has contacted you out of the blue will give you something for nothing?

Village Hall Committee
We have some new committee members whom we welcome most gladly. However, we still need more. One evening a month for our meeting plus helping at occasional events such as the annual fete and helping working parties on hall improvements is all the commitment there is.

WENSUM VALLEY BIRDWATCHING SOCIETY
In a change to our advertised programme, RSPB’s Eastern Region Community Talks Officer Steve Lovell stepped in with a talk entitled ‘Save our Birds of Prey’. In a subject guaranteed to be contentious Steve spoke about the work going on to halt the decline in numbers of birds of prey. Birds of prey have been legally protected since the 1950s but, as Steve showed with some distressing pictures, this has not prevented birds being killed by trapping, shooting, poisoning and nest destruction, often blamed on those with sporting interests and the management of game birds. A paradox there somewhere. The bottom line for preservation of these majestic birds was for reasons of biodiversity, they also act as environmental indicators (alert to chemicals such as DDT) and, love them or hate them, birds of prey have always been part of our heritage and are here to stay.
Field Trip with a difference:
Our August field trip started with a train journey on the Norwich to Yarmouth line. We alighted at a small railway station in the middle of nowhere, described by the rail company as NOT having the following facilities: a ticket office, waiting room, staff, a café, phone, toilets, bus link, taxi rank or even access by road. In fact the only thing we saw, as we stood on the small wooden platform under a vast Norfolk sky, was a sign that said ‘Berney Arms Station’. A wonderfully remote place to start a bird walk. From here we followed Weaver’s Way to the river Yare then walked along the flood bank of Breydon Water, finishing several hours later at Great Yarmouth Station for the return journey to Norwich. Over 40 species seen, including whimbrel, wheatear, buzzard and three species of wagtail, pied, grey and yellow who obligingly gathered together to give us a master class in identification. An excellent walk which I can recommend, for those who are sound of bladder.
Dates for the diary:
Indoor meeting: There will a talk on Thursday October 16th at Weston Longville Village Hall, by Tim Loseby on ‘A Bird Photographers Garden’. Start 7.30, all are welcome, tea and biscuits laid on.
Field Trip: Back to the North Norfolk Coast. On Sunday October 26th we will be visiting the North Norfolk coast with Josh Leeder. Newcomers always welcome, binoculars available for loan.

Benefice News & Events
The ladies’ lunch held on 16th August was described by one lady as “a nice social event and the men were great”. A big thank you to all the gallant cooks, waiters and washer uppers. £361 was raised for the Macmillan Cancer Nurses.

ALL SAINT’S, BAWDESWELL
Elizabeth Lenton, the mother of Janet Cockburn, died on 21st July. She attended our church regularly whilst she lived in Bawdeswell. Elizabeth had a accomplished career as a composer and music teacher. At her funeral, Janet and her brother John sang one of her favourite compositions. It was a moving moment.
Our thoughts have been with Janet and David who would like to thank everybody for their support during this difficult time.
On a happier note, September saw the baptism of Rachel, Jaymee, Kayla, Alfie and Pheobe, all from the Fisher family. Welcome!
Church Organ
Exciting changes have taken place in the church. The old Edwardian ‘drawing room’ organ has been dismantled, removed and replaced with a specially commissioned Makin Johannes digital organ. Made in Holland to our own specification, it sounds wonderful and is a great asset to our church. Come and hear it sometime. You can only be impressed. It will be played at most services, but look out also for the special concerts planned in the future. The first is a demonstration by Dr Gerald Gifford on Sunday 14th December at 4pm – a demonstration of its capabilities.
The organ appeal now stands at around £13,500 donated in several generous gifts. Help is still needed to pay off the balance of the loan. We are only halfway there. Please help if you can by making regular payments, however modest.
Churchyard Extension
The memorial stones older than 75 years (with a few exceptions) have now been moved to the far left hand side of the cemetery. Future burials will need to be on the area cleared and if any remains are disturbed, they will be treated with respect, moved to one side and reburied afterwards.
This is not a problem unique to our village. If it disturbs you, an alternative is to consider one of the privately run burial parks as at Colney near Norwich, or ask to be cremated as many people do. We have plenty of room for the internment of ashes which require a much shallower burial.
Norfolk Churches Trust Sponsored Cycle ride
Thank you everyone who took a turn manning the church on 13 September and those who sponsored the riders. Ken Ewing, William Mason and Robin Taylor visited 22 churches and met a lot of friends on the way, including the entire Roberts family led by Fel. Haven’t heard how they got on but nice to have their support too. Norfolk Churches Trust looks after redundant churches, many of them historic treasures.

ST.THOMAS’ CHURCH, FOXLEY
The Ladies’ Lunch held in the Village Hall on l6th. August was a great success, ably catered for by “Gentlemen” from the benefice. The “Ladies” enjoyed a delicious meal and much conversation. Donations amounted to £36l (including Gift Aid refunds) and were sent to Macmillan Cancer Support. The Norfolk Churches Trust’s and St. Thomas’ funds were also helped by John Harvey and Sandra Wood on Saturday, 13th September when they took part in the Bike Ride and raised £350, which , with the added Gift Aid, will be divided between the Trust and our church. Well done to them both and to those who welcomed riders to the church. Fortunately it was a sunny day and all who took part seemed to have enjoyed themselves.
Our new groundsman Vic Gathergood is keeping the churchyard trim and neat, no small task as the grass has been growing unbelievably fast! Some of the congregation too, have been doing their bit with rogue brambles, elder , bryony and so on. We hope soon to replace the weeds on the outside of the boundary wall with suitable plants; some greenery is necessary to protect the wall from water thrown up by passing traffic.
Oliver Moore was baptised by the Rev. David Head on 30th August which was a joyous occasion.
Our Harvest Festival on 12th October will be an informal One More Step Service. We shall be decorating the dear old place, as usual, – if anyone would like to help, please let me know. Gifts of garden produce will certainly be most welcome, particularly as they will then be passed to Reepham Day Centre and used in their regular lunches for the elderly and disabled.

From the Rector
Dear Everybody, hello again,
A major American bank has just hit the buffers, and the shock-waves are felt round the world. Banks lend money to each other, as well as to businesses and individuals. Before the credit crunch, I wasn’t really aware of that. But now, what happens to an American bank seems important to rural England. Who among us will have life-savings that will be affected? Who is going to end up poorer as a result?
I’m just learning how very big a system money is. It all seems so inter-connected. A price-rise in one commodity ends up putting the price of our food up. A company defaulting on their debts can put several other companies out of business. I already knew that on a small scale. But the figures now seem so huge.
The same seems to be true of global warming and protection of the environment. It is a huge interlinked system, and what happens in one place will affect several others. I was interested to see the Panorama programme in which multinational companies were buying carbon credits in the Brazilian rain-forest. They can pollute elsewhere, but at least a very valuable and fragile eco-system is maintained.
It reminds me of how much I am a system myself – as we all are – and that one thing that I do in one part of my life can affect other parts, even though they don’t seem connected. When I was on sabbatical, I would walk to the National Gallery each day I was there, and spend up to two hours walking in London; cheaper, and sometimes faster, and there was more to look at. But I got fitter, without trying. And as I got fitter, I got happier, and more purposeful. And strangely, it made my prayer life easier.
We live in uncertain times. In what ways can you affect what is going on around you for the better? After all, you are a part of the system too. And in your life, how can the strengths within you help the weaker bits?
God bless you. David Head
