BAWDESWELL BOOK CLUB

This month’s choice was Amsterdam by Ian McEwan described as ‘a tale of love and deception’.

The novel revolves around the life and death of Molly Lane, her publicist husband and three of her former lovers - amongst whom is cross-dressing MP Julian Garmony

Central to the plot is the discovery of a photograph, taken by Molly, of Garmony sporting full women’s dress and the furore surrounding the decision of a another former lover to publish the photograph in the national newspaper of which he is editor.

Although thin on the ground, due to the Easter break, we all decided that this had been a disappointing read and was not in the same league as other works we had enjoyed by the same writer.

Next month we will be reading ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ by  Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie which will be discussed at our next meeting on  Thursday 3rd May
