A letter from Lincolnshire

I read with great interest the article written by Bryan Donoghue,  in the April Reeve’s Tale, of his recollections of Bawdeswell in the 1940’s.

However, my memories of Mrs Lewis differ from those of Mr Donoghue.  She was certainly strict, and did everything to ensure that her pupils respected authority – what a change from today!

She had Musical Evenings at Chaucer House – one or two of us played violins (badly), and I recall Jack Buxton singing “The Grandfather Clock”.

Mrs Lewis very kindly offered to give Maths lessons (in the evenings) to my brother Mike, as he needed ‘O’ level  Maths to gain entry to Horticultural College.  He went on to become a Deputy Principal at a large Horticultural College in Scotland and he has always been grateful for her interest and very practical help.

I am sure there will be others in the village who have positive rather than negative memories of Mrs Lewis – one of  Bawdeswell’s  ‘characters’ of that era.

I would be very interested to hear of their recollections, and also of any other of the colourful characters who lived in the village all those years ago.

Ann Taylor, Lincolnshire.
