ANNUAL PLOUGHING MATCH
Almost 90 ploughing enthusiasts including three ladies travelled from several counties to take part in this ploughing match on February 4th at Billingford on land owned by Mr David Gurney of Bawdeswell Hall.
The day started with a sunny morning although several ploughmen and judges said they had driven through a lot of fog.
Ploughing started at 10am. Many Spectators came along including several local people. The standard of ploughing was very high and the twelve judges were given a hard task of awarding points in several categories.
The fog started to roll in around 1.30pm by which time most of the plots had been ploughed.
Around 2.45pm all the scores had been totalled up and checked. Mr Gurney presented the trophies. Some winners had left for home earlier because of the fog but the organisers were able to arrange for other ploughmen to take their trophies to them.
The raffle held on the day made over £200 and with donations a cheque for £250 has been posted to The Camphill Communities (East Anglia) Ltd. at Thornage, near Holt, which was the charity nominated by Mr Gurney.
Many ploughmen thanked Steve and Deana Framingham for a well organised match and commentated on the excellent site.
Steve and David had 2 ploughing matches to go to out of Norfolk to judge, one in February and one in March. As most farmers have now ploughed up ready for Spring sowing, ploughing matches start again in Norfolk in the Autumn.
