25th Anniversary
Bawdeswell Garden Centre
Congratulations to Peter and Judy Underwood
and their dedicated staff on the 25th Anniversary of their Garden
Centre.
Whenever you tell someone you live in Bawdeswell, they say “Oh, yes the Garden Centre, we know it
well.”
Peter and Judy
Underwood purchased the garden centre in 1983. It was originally a
conifer nursery, but with a team of ambitious and knowledgeable staff it has
grown and gone from strength to strength.
It has remained a family business and
become one of the finest Garden Centres in the
region.
For the Millennium they created a beautiful
landscaped garden which has matured into a peaceful area to relax and enjoy
running water and stunning shrubs and statues.
Celebrations take place on Sunday 1st
June. Do join in.

LETTERS
Derek Moore - I
would like to offer sincere thanks to friends and neighbours
who provided support during Derek's illness. I am grateful for the
kindness everybody has shown to myself and the
family and also for the numerous offers of help over the past months.
Heather Moore, Foxley
(The above letter was
received in time for publication last month and the editor apologises
sincerely for its omission.)
Christina Ivy Daisy Sparkes
21/09/1909 – 1/04/2008
Christina was cremated at Earlham Crematorium on
Friday 2nd May, the service was conducted
by the Rev Tom Candeland.
She retired in Norfolk in 1980 after her last position
as the Personal Assistant to the Group Captain in charge of RAF Swanton Morley.
She enjoyed the community life that she and her husband, Charles, found in Bawdeswell.
After Charles died in 2001 she found it increasingly
difficult to manage on her own and so greatly valued and appreciated the help
and support that she enjoyed at Hill Barn Residential Home during the time she
stayed there.
Christina’s main interests were her family, especially
the close relationships she had with family abroad, (Canada, Holland and South
Africa) gardening, listening to a good “who dunnit”
on her cassette tapes and intelligent conversation!
In many ways Christina was not a traditional lady and
this is reflected in the fact that she wishes some of her ashes to be scattered
over the hills and mountains of England and some to eventually find their way
to a little part of India where she was born. The rest of her ashes will be
interred with Charles’ ashes in Bawdeswell Cemetery.
Charlie and I would like to thank all family, friends
and neighbours for the many cards and kind words and
for the donations made to the Macular Disease Society.
Christina trod this earth gently and her footprints
have left their mark. She will be sorely missed by her family and by all who
were touched by her presence.
Thank you. Pat Cronin (daughter)
Tony Shepherd -
died last month
after an illness which had been with him for some time and forced his eventual
retirement.
Tony was a CDT teacher at Greshams,
Reepham High and in London before taking on Bawdeswell Garage from his daughter and son-in-law. He was past retirement age then and ran the
business very much as a hobby. A real
workaholic he took on the running of the post office and manned the petrol
pumps at his busy garage in the Street. He was also a hovercraft enthusiast,
building, repairing and racing them.
He worked well into his seventies or was it eighties? I don't know his exact age. We all miss him.

BAWDESWELL FOOTBALL CLUB.
Bawdeswell FC have
now almost completed their league season games with a very creditable 42 pts
from 14 wins and 11 losses. The club has far exceeded its target for the season
so very well done all of you. At the time of writing they have one match left

Reserves whom they were playing on 10th May suffered a broken leg
and the game had to be abandoned. Our best wishes go to the Foulsham
player for a speedy recovery.
New players and supporters are
always needed for the team. For information about the club please contact

Friends of
Thank you everyone who supported the May Ball on 17th May. Two hundred and fifteen tickets were sold
which was a tremendous response. We
think we cleared £3,000. Our best fund raiser to date. Thank you everyone.
A special thank-you to our Sponsors this
year, E-Builders of Reepham (www.ebuilders.co.uk) , Thomas Sanderson
Blinds (www.thomas-sanderson.co.uk)
, and Adnams Cellar & Kitchen (www.adnams.co.uk), without whose support we
could not stage such a grand event.
The meal was good, the company excellent
and the Big Band music full of nostalgia – and what a good Disco too! A memorable evening.
Thanks to one and all for your
support. We hope you all enjoyed
yourselves and will come again another time..
We must thank the ladies who decorated the
marquee and the tables with beautiful flower arrangements, Great Witchingham Cricket Club for running the bar, and the small
team of committee members who worked so hard in the background, setting up,
running and finally clearing up. It was
a lot of work for such a small team.
After
the Ball was over and we had all gone home, the marquee was vandalised
- slashed along one full length with a sharp knife – mindless damage ruining the marquee,
damaging the business of the owner and the name of Bawdeswell. This
happened between 2am and 9am and we wouldn’t like to think it was someone
local, carrying a sharp knife. If anybody
has any information please phone Crimestoppers on
0800 555 111 (you don’t have to say who you are), or the police Crimes
Investigation Unit on 0845 456 4567 quoting Crime Reference number CR25938/08/5 .

THE ANNUAL VILLAGE FAIR
PROJECT BAWDESWELL
A meeting of the
committee was held in the village hall on Saturday 10th May. Reports
on the progress of the Hall, Playground and Activities sub-groups were given.
It was agreed that there would be
a presentation on the Village Hall feedback at the Village Feté.
We need to increase momentum.
Unfortunately, we are relying on a small number of village members who are
already heavily involved in the Community.
If you want better facilities, now is the time for your
support.
Some work is being done
between meetings and behind the scenes by the sub groups but we need more
people.
Join us on the 14th
June at 10.00 am in the Village Hall. Come along and hear all about the various
work streams and share your ideas with us.
Go to www.projectbawdeswell.org.uk
for more information or call the Secretary on 688749
Children’s
Play Area
The play equipment from RAF Coltishall is still lying on the play area. A significant
sum of money is required to refurbish and install this equipment. We are now
looking for donations and people to help to with grant applications.
If anyone out there can spare a few
hours to help or surf the web, please contact the Project Bawdeswell
Secretary.
There
are not enough people to go round so if you want it finished for your children
to play on, come and discuss it.

REEPHAM & DISTRICT ROTARY
Club members have decided
to donate £500 to the Burma Disaster Appeal and are also looking into other
ways of helping, possibly through Aquaboxes.
The Club is also providing
further funds to help the First Response Team in Reepham.
President Ian Malton is keen to support this local
charity. One of the Club members was recently involved in a road accident
and the First Response Team were quickly on the scene
and of great assistance.
President Ian Malton has been elected onto the Reepham
‘Green Team’. Being an architect it was thought that he could help with
advising on insulation matters and saving energy.
Several members of the Club
are visiting Ross on Wye for a canoeing trip and later
in the summer have organised a gliding evening at Tibenham.

Bogus Callers (from Norfolk County Council
Website)
Bogus callers are con
men or women who use a variety of stories to gain access to a persons home so
they can steal. They sometimes pose as employees from companies or organisations. They can be very believable.
If someone unexpected
does call and you can't ignore them follow these steps:
• Make sure your back
door is locked
• Use your spyhole or window to check if you recognise
the caller. Ask yourself am I expecting anyone?
• If you do not recognise the caller speak through the closed door. If you
must open the door use the door chain or bar first.
• If the caller is
selling something or offering work on your house or garden tell them you are
not interested and ask them to go.
• If they do not
leave tell them you will call the Police.
• If necessary ring
the Police on 999.
• If the caller seems
to have a valid reason for knocking – ask for identification. Take it from the
person (through the letter box if necessary) and look at it carefully.
• Ring the company or
organisation the caller claims to be from (use the
phone book) to confirm their identity.
• Listen to any
doubts you or others may have.
• If in any doubt
keep them out.
All Quiet on
the Banham Front - No Stink Campaign
The Rendering Plant at the top of the hill outside Gt Witchingham is
quiet.
Up to now (9th May) Broadland
District Council have not issued a Pollution
Prevention and Control Licence to allow Banhams to start rendering. It appears that not all
the questions posed to Banhams by the Council have
been answered to their satisfaction. Without the Licence
there would be no point in appealing against Norfolk County Council's decision
in February to reject planning permission.
Banhams have until the beginning of September to appeal against Norfolk
County Council's decision.
WENSUM VALLEY BIRDWATCHING
SOCIETY
AGM time again: chairman Alwyn
Jackson gave a short review of the of the year’s activities. He reported that the society continues to
grow in numbers and recognition. We received invitations to attend two significant events
in the valley, the 20th Anniversary of the Pensthorpe
Conservation Trust, where prince Phillip enquired about the WVBS (how’s that
for recognition), and the official opening of the Norfolk Ornithological Association’s Reserve
at Hempton Marsh. The Society also participated in
the Wild About the Wensum event at Pensthorpe
and the Wild About Norfolk Conservation Fair in Norwich.
We had some memorable presentations where we were
transported to South Africa, Ethiopia, India, Trinidad and Tobago and Costa
Rica, enjoying some stunning photography in the process. Outdoor highlights
were encounters with nightjars at Marsham Heath,
closer encounters with cranes at Pensthorpe, and even
closer to birds in the hand during a ringing demonstration at Whitwell, also
the spectacle of the corvid roost at Buckenham Marshes and hen harriers coming into roost at Roydon. There were many more. Alwyn
finished by thanking the members of the committee and all those
who helped make the society run smoothly.
Indoor presentation: After the AGM, coffee and raffle (we know
how to live it up) Sophie Barker, the Assistant warden at the NOA’s reserve at Holme, talked
about her trip to Long Point in Canada. Long Point attracts large numbers of
migratory birds who rest and feed before continuing their journey, offering an
opportunity to count and monitor many species as they fly north in spring and
south in autumn. The different species processed were too numerous to remember
but I managed to jot down, northern cardinal, mourning dove, lots of different
warblers and our old friend the white crowned sparrow, whose numbers ran into
hundreds.
Nightjar
Evening:
Thursday, June 19th at Marsham
Heath. If you have never seen a nightjar now is your chance. I went for the
first time last year and it was well worth it.

available on loan.

Benefice News and Events
On 29th June
there will be a special St Peter’s Day Communion service in Bawdeswell
Church with the choir. Afterwards we’ll
all go to Bawdeswell Village Hall for a bring and share party.
(The Rector was going to have a birthday party at the Rectory until he
discovered it was the day of the Lyng Moto Cross!) Please
bring food to share. Drink will be
provided. All welcome.
Walsingham Walk
A very big thank you to everyone who
supported the Benefice Walk to Walsingham on 26th
April. Not just to
those who walked part or all of the way but especially the generous folk who
offered accommodation to our visitors from Yorkshire, transport or general back
up on the day. This was greatly appreciated.
After a week of indifferent weather the actual day
dawned bright & warm with increasing sunshine. It was Norfolk at its best,
trees in full blossom, a profusion of wild flowers & even a barn owl
quartering. Twenty people gathered at Foxley Church
for prayers before setting off on the first five miles to Wood Norton Village
Hall & a welcome refreshment break. Seven people continued the walk with a
picnic lunch at Croxton & afternoon tea at Thursford Green.
As the day progressed more people joined in until by
the time we arrived in Walsingham at 5pm our number
had grown to eighteen.
There was just time for a little sight seeing or the
opportunity to sit in the beautiful & peaceful garden of the Anglican
Shrine before the moving Pilgrims’ Eucharist service. Later we all adjourned to
the Refectory & shared a meal together. Then weary but happy we were
transported home.

ST.THOMAS’ CHURCH, FOXLEY
Foxley PCC held its Annual Meeting in the church
on 28th.April, chaired by the rector. The first part of the
proceedings is known as “The Annual Vestry Meeting”, during which the
churchwardens are elected .We were all pleased to hear that Dr. Tony Rushbrook was willing to join John Harvey
, who had been the only churchwarden for several years. Now they will
share responsibility for the numerous duties associated with running and
maintaining the building and its services, not to mention its role within the
Diocese.
We then proceeded to the Annual Parochial
Meeting and the Rev. Head gave his report on the Benefice and Foxley, especially thanking the congregation and helpers
for all their efforts in the past year.
The Review of the Year was then read out by
the Secretary, Diana Harvey, with particular reference to the unfortunate
experience of vandalism to the chancel window and our great good fortune that,
thanks to John and Mary Fletchers’ Open Garden and the “ex gratia” payment from
our insurers, we had been able to meet the costs and those of refurbishing the
window next to it
The Treasurer’s Report, presented by John
Harvey, had been adopted at the previous meeting showing a steady financial
situation. Mr. Nigel Hatch gave a brief resume of meetings of the Deanery Synod
and Mrs Monica Hatch confirmed that the number on the
Electoral Roll stood at 18.
The P.C.C. was re-elected en bloc with the
welcome addition of Mrs. Christine Rushbrook. All the
officers were also re-elected.
Mr. Harvey then thanked the Rev. Head for
his ministry to us during the year and wished him well for his forthcoming
periods of sabbatical leave. He then thanked one and all for “pitching in and
keeping the show on the road”and Mr. Hugh Rose,in turn, expressed the P.C.C.’s thanks to Mr. Harvey for his hard work and
commitment.
We look forward to a talk by the Head
Gardener at Salle Park, a Ladies’ Luncheon in August and Harvest Supper, plus
any other fund-raising social occasion we can think of. We need the money for
necessary maintenance of the church building and might even manage to resurrect
the tradition of bell-ringing, something for which Foxley
was well-known in the past.

and have paid the deposit. Installation should start in September.
The fund stands at just under £12,000, up
nearly £1,000 on last month. The Organ Appeal is to be officially launched at a
special concert in the church on Saturday 14 June starring Gerald Gifford,
curator of music at the Fitzwilliam Museum. He will bring along some period
keyboard instruments and play amongst other pieces some unpublished music by
Handel discovered in the archives of the Fitzwilliam Museum.
It promises to be an interesting and unique occasion.
We
are encouraging people to pledge modest donations over a period of time if it
is easier for them to become involved in that way as we are considering
borrowing the money to get on with the project, and regular payments would help
us repay the loan. The organ will become
a memorial to anyone nominated by the donors and these names will be recorded
and displayed in the organ gallery.
Details of the project are on a display inside the
church which is open daily.
See also the manufacturer’s website at www.makinorgans.co.uk where you can listen to samples of
music from these advanced instruments.

From the Rector
Dear Everybody, hello again,
I was driving on a slow piece of road, when suddenly
two finches flew out of the hedge, up and down in front of my windscreen,
battling each other. They were so intent
on their fight, that they didn’t notice the car. They suddenly plunged down in front of it in
their “dogfight”, and
– impossible even at that speed for me to swerve – were probably
killed.
Another natural disaster has happened in the world,
and I wonder how many fights – or love affairs, or exams or job applications or
anything else on which people may become intent – have just been swept aside
like those finches. We carry on with our lives, being passionate about things,
not knowing what is round the corner.
The cyclone in Burma is already being compared to the Boxing Day
tsunami. Thousands of fights, about
money and love and the position of boundaries and similar things, will have
been abruptly ended for those who have died.
But in order to help the living, in the face of a
disaster we mustn’t fight. As I write,
the Burmese regime has been criticised for holding a
political referendum in the middle of this disaster, and for delaying foreign
aid reaching those worst affected.
Sometimes, we have to put aside our differences and focus on the needs
of the many who are suffering. Disaster
is not a time for point-scoring.
Our day-to-day experiences are important; they are
what make up each individual life. Our
fights, goals, hopes, loves, are all on a small scale, compared to the whole
world. But there is also a “big
picture”. For some of us it’s God, for
others fate, for others our common humanity, for others their family or nation,
or a mixture of these and other things.
There are outside forces that affect us as individuals.
But it is a shame if we are so intent on what is
happening to us, and our own concerns, that others get damaged in the
process. Sometimes focus on one thing
means neglect of others.
God bless you.
