FOXLEY SOCIAL CLUB – Talk on
Norwich Cathedral
On Wednesday the 12th April the club had Mrs. Barbara Miller come to
give us a talk with slides on Norwich Cathedral. This was a speaker in
top form. With all the confidence and authority of an Oxford don, she
imparted to all who were there her knowledge and her enthusiasm for this
politically and architecturally intricate subject. The whole history of
the cathedral, which began with William the Conqueror, was unfurled for us with
pace and clarity, evoking alternatively amazement and admiration for the skill
and ingenuity shown in those far-off-days for such a major feat of
construction. (Contractors for the Wembley Stadium bow your heads!)
Her slide show which followed—and here again the quality of her photography was
way above the usual amateur standard---showed the more intricate and less
accessible parts of the cathedral in all their coloured glory. It
was made very apparent to us that the cathedral reflected the great importance
and wealth of Norwich at the time. Thank you Mrs. Miller for sharing some
of your obviously great learning with us.
