BECK WOMENS INSTITUTE,
SPARHAM OLD SCHOOL ROOM Apart from 3 members on holiday, the Beck WI turned up in
force to hear our surprise speaker at the May meeting. This turned out to be one of our members, Gill
Page, who entertained us for a full hour by showing us incredibly beautiful
slides of the Antarctic. Her recent holiday there had been a wonderful
experience and we listened enthralled as she described life on an icebreaker,
walking on frozen sea, seeing the resident penguins, skuas and seals, and
even entering Shackleton's hut - still in perfect condition. Although they did experience a two-day white-out, a few rough
seas and it was always extremely cold, for most of the time they could
clearly see (and photograph) the ice and snow covered landscape. Mt. Erebus
was never far from view. A most interesting hour. After refreshment, Jennifer read last month's minutes and
Ruth W. spoke of forthcoming events. The raffle was won by Gill and a second raffle by Janet.
The exhibit was won by Ruth C. Next month's meeting at the Old School Room, Sparham, is
on Monday 13th June and we are to hear of Mrs. Alfred Wall's visit to
Sandringham in 1919. The exhibit is Royal Connection. Hope to see you all. Mary Humphrey |
