Wednesday 10th May 2006 - Members turned out in force to listen to Mr Jon Read give a very interesting talk on the history of Old Hall Stainless Steel up to the present day. He brought with him a comprehensive selection of the most popular items from his collection, all in immaculate condition.
Stainless Steel items declined in popularity until the quite recent revival of anything from the 60’s, but just in case we wanted to replace items given for a bric-a-brac stall or car boot sale, Jon gave members the opportunity to buy some memorable pieces for posterity!
Jon Read is highly amusing and has given us talks in the past about Gasworks and Soap. Potentially, quite uninteresting subjects but not with Jon at the helm, so we will be inviting him back in the future.

Wednesday 7th June 2006 - Dennis Tomlinson came to give us a talk on his ‘Wartime Boyhood’. I think we all expected a rather harrowing tale of someone living in London or Liverpool or some other heavily bombed city---but no, this was a gentle rite-of-passage story of a lad growing up in rural Hertfordshire throughout the war years. There were reminders, of course, for all of us who remember those years, of such things as Ration Books, gas masks, Homeguard and black-outs; but otherwise it was a portrait of long-gone country life as seen through the eyes of a young boy. Gentle whimsy and nostalgia.
