BECK WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
As promised in last month's notes, our June meeting saw us greeted at the great West door of Salle Church by Peter Bradbury. After pointing out the feathered angels, other carvings, the parapet and pinnacles, Peter led us round the outside of this huge medieval church pointing out fascinating carved details as we went past the nave, transepts and chancel and back to the West door.
We then spent some time in the church, continually being amazed by Peter's knowledge of date, famous people and the wonderful work and gifts given by generous benefactors over the years. Our attention was drawn in turn to the 15th century font, the lovely Chancel roof with its carved bosses, the Chancel stalls and the handsome misereres, the three-decker pulpit, several interesting but incomplete brasses, partly stained glass windows, and lots more.
There is so much to see in Salle Church and we thank Peter very much for opening our eyes to some of its beauty.
From Salle we motored back to Sparham and to welcome cups of tea, cake and chat at Gill's. Thank you very much Gill.
Next month we meet in the Old School Room at 7.30 p.m. when Hazel Henderson will talk to us on Fun & Games at the Court of King James. We are hoping to hear several 'home made' limericks ("Here lies ....") from our members.
