Reepham & District   Rotary   Newsletter

One of main projects for Rotary International during this year is adult
literacy and Reepham District Rotary Club have taken an initiative in this
area.  They organised a meeting at The Old Brewery House Hotel, Reepham on
13th May and it was attended by seven other local clubs plus representatives
from the BBC who are helping to sponsor the project.  Adult literacy is a
major problem affecting a vast number of people.  Reepham Club has already
put in hand the first of its initiatives within the town.

Rotarian Steve Catchpole has recently been presented with a Paul Harris
fellowship award for his sterling work on the Whitwell Hall toilet and
shower block which the club recently constructed.  Steve was the project
manager and co-ordinator and put many, many hours of hard work into the
scheme.  His award was presented by the National District Governor.

We have recently welcomed a new member into the club.  Terry Sutton, who
recently moved to Reepham from Doncaster, has joined 'on a free transfer'.
Terry is a retired bank manager.

Members  visited the police headquarters in Wymondham and had a tour
of the firearms department.  A very interesting evening.

Lesley Tooley who runs the Reepham Hair Salon has been awarded a community
service award for his sterling work with the Reepham Scouts.  Lesley has
shown true dedication to the movement over the years and thoroughly deserves
his Rotary award.

The Club recently held a barn dance at Town Farm Booton by kind permission
of Rotarian Robert Buxton and his wife Rita.  It was a very successful
evening raising just under £600 for the clubs charities.

We have had to say goodbye to Rotarian Paul Lantau and his wife Valerie who
are leaving for their new home in Portugal.  Before departing they kindly
organised a BBQ for club members and wives and managed to raise nearly £1000
for our charities.  Proceeds from this and the barn dance will be presented
to Research into Prostate Cancer.

Members have agreed to help send support to the Indonesian earthquake
disaster.  They have agreed to purchase and fill five aquaboxes and also
send a donation to the RIB district appeal.  If anyone can help with items
to fill the boxes which comprise of practical things such as cutlery,
kitchen utensils and hand tools, a list can be supplied by Rotarian Barry
Howes on 01603 870414.  Any help would be much appreciated.
