WENSUM VALLEY BIRDWATCHING SOCIETY

Our indoor meeting at Lenwade included a presentation ‘Birds around the World’. This was an enthralling presentation by a larger than life Mike Linley. Mike was a photographer for the BBC series ‘Life On Earth’ and had also spent many years working on the Anglia ‘Survival’ series which became a benchmark in natural history documentaries. With a library of 40,000 slides and almost as many anecdotes from his world travels I am sure we will see him back at Lenwade at some future meeting.

For the third year running we were up at day break for a Dawn Chorus walk at Sparham Pools. As promised, those who stayed the course were rewarded with a hot bacon roll at the end of the walk. Top sight - a Black Tern.

Buzzards in Norfolk – on a bright and sunny Saturday, weather arranged by Charles Neale, we assembled at the Raptor watch point near Gt Ryburgh (Map ref TF971255) where  we watched Buzzards ride the thermals above Sennowe Park.  For us novices it was good to hear the experts engaged in lively debate and much resorting to books as they sought to differentiate between Common and Honey Buzzards, they were quite a distance away however. Also seen were Hobbys, Heron, Sparrowhawk and Marsh Harriers.

For our outdoor meeting on Sunday 3rd July we visit the RSPB Minsmere Reserve. Meet at J Sainsbury’s car park, Longwater at 8.30a.m. for car sharing. There is an entrance charge to the reserve for non-RSPB members, there is a restaurant, shop and the usual facilities so no reason not to attend, we even provide binoculars.  If there is sufficient time we may visit Dunwich Heath to find the breeding Dartford Warblers.

Indoor meeting on Thursday 21st July. ‘Pensthorpe’ by Tim Nevard. Lenwade Village Hall, 7.30 start. All are welcome. Non members £2, refreshments available.
