From the
Rector
Dear Everybody, hello again. There have been many different comments on the Indian Ocean tsunami. One of the most telling has been the poem on Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show, by Lucy Berry, the resident poet. She talks about “the churning wave of the world’s emotion”, about being “awash with anger”, and describes herself as “a drop in the ocean”. (If you want to see the whole poem, go to www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/vine/poem.shtml ). Many of us had the feelings she describes; being carried along on a tide of others’ emotions, feeling pummelled ourselves, and feeling small. Nature seems so big, so out of our control, and the human misery is almost beyond comprehension. What can we do? Together we have raised millions upon millions. Yes, we are all drops ion the ocean, but together we achieve a great deal. As Mother Teresa said: “People say what I do is only a drop in the ocean, but the ocean is made up of drops.” So now the challenge for us – to borrow Lucy’s image – is to keep the tidal wave of goodwill going; to see how much we can do together when we are all moved by what we see and know. Together in love and charity we can do great things. Once we have rebuilt these lives, there will be others for us to help. Remember also the campaign to “Make Poverty History”. God bless you in your care for others. David Head.
