Platinum Stables
The fund raising sale on the 18
Oct raised the outstanding sum of £545.00 on the day.
This could not have been
achieved without all those supporters that donated items for sale, organised
and set up the hall and cleared up afterwards, assisted on the tables and the
tea ladies who not only served teas but also sold delicious home made cakes so
generously donated by friends, to all of whom we and the horses extend our
grateful thanks.
Not only was it a grand day but
we hope everyone enjoyed themselves.
Unsold items have been donated
to Aid Africa, The Children’s Society, Hedgehog Rescue and several charity
shops, which has spread your kind generosity to other good causes.
Many thanks, Ron Smith
From the Editors
A big thank you again to all the volunteers who distribute the Reeve’s Tale each month.

BAWDESWELL COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL
We are pleased to announce that the Sports Partnership have arranged extra provision for us starting 11th November for both curriculum provision and clubs.
Rhino Class will be have multi skills clubs and Tag Rugby and Dolphin Class will be having an after school football club.
An extra Christmas Celebration. – As well as our Key Stage 1 Nativity performance and the whole school church service we are holding a Carol Concert with North Elmham School.
The Governors of both schools are very keen to have an event that involves every child and as many parents as possible. To this end they have arranged a Carol Concert “Carols Round the Tree” to be held at Northgate High School in Dereham on Monday 15th December at 6pm.
We hope you will be able to support this wonderful opportunity for a community event.
The Partnership – A committee of staff and governors are meeting regularly to monitor and guide its evolution and to ensure that the benefits planned come to fruition. Already we can see that there are numerous benefits arising from entering into our Partnership.
We are only 9 weeks into the Partnership, and already we can see that the extra opportunities made available to both schools, has made it a positive start for the Partnership.
BAWDESWELL
BADGERS PRE – SCHOOL
Hello from the Bawdeswell Badgers Sett.
All our children have been very busy this month, as part of our Knowledge and Understanding of the World we have looked at Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Light, we made masks of Rhama and Sita, created beautiful lamps from clay which we painted and as a culmination of our activities we lit our Diva lamps at snack time to welcome that which is good into our pre-school, they looked very pretty,
We moved on to Remembrance Day and made our own Poppies, they were tricky to make but we learned that we wear them to remember the people in the Services who look after us and keep us safe, we add our own small voice of thanks to them.
With the computer vouchers from Tesco we have obtained a listening station (CD player with five ports) this is hugely popular, it enables the children to practise their listening skills in a very enjoyable way, thank you all who collected.
To finish we thank our committee for their tireless work on our behalf and we send our love to Sarah who is recovering from surgery, we miss you, hurry back.
Love from us all at Pre-School.

Tricks for the Family Magician
Take a Piece of String
Can you make a knot in the middle of a piece of string while holding both ends and not letting go?
Place the string in front of you on a table.
Fold your arms and pick up the left end of the string with your right hand and the other with your left.
Then, as you unfold your arms, you will make a knot in the middle of the string!
A Card Trick
Have the pack thoroughly shuffled and, as you go to place it face downwards on the table, secretly note the bottom card which, let us suppose, is the Ace of Clubs.
Ask someone to choose a card from the pack.
Return it to the top of the pack and cut the pack several times.
With a bit of luck the chosen card will be the one in front of the Ace of Clubs! Try it.
The Magic Egg
Soak an egg in a cup of vinegar for two days. The shell will go quite soft and you can squeeze it through the neck of a bottle.
Soon it will harden again, will puzzle your friends and confirm you as a magician!

The Harvest Supper was a great success with an excellent meal ably served by some of the youngsters from the village and of course an amusing and lively entertainment by Keith Loads, ‘The Norfolk Shepherd’. Our thanks to everyone who supported this event and of course to all those who provided the food.
The Christmas concert will be held on 7th December at 4pm in the church and tickets are now available from Robin Taylor on 01362 688268. Numbers will have to be limited because of the space taken up by the two choirs so if you want to come along book your ticket promptly to avoid disappointment. Ticket price of £5 includes mulled wine and mince pies.
Invitations will be sent out soon for the renewal evening in January. Another social event not to be missed.
Bawdeswell
Book Club
Our last book choice was ‘The Sex Life of my Aunt’ by Mavis Cheek.
The story
begins with Dilys, a middle-aged wife and mother who
seems to have it all: lovely home, lovely husband, lovely family, sitting on
the platform of a railway station, crying over the death of a close friend. A
handsome younger man offers her a handkerchief. After this innocent brief
encounter one thing leads to another and, before she knows it, she is in the
throes of a passionate affair. When she needs to provide a cover story after
one of her illicit liaisons, she pretends to have met up with an elderly
relative, Eliza, the ageing aunt of the title, for cocktails. And so the lies
begin and Dilys’ life becomes very complica
The reaction of the book club
members to this book was very mixed. Some members found plenty of humour in the
situations that Dilys found herself and enjoyed the
book as a tongue-in-cheek morality tale. Other members found it boring and had
no sympathy for the main characters who they thought were unconvincing. It was
good to exchange our different views on the book. We did agree that the book
could put you off embarking on an extra-marital affair. Pat
Catchpole
The book club meets at the Workhouse Bar on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm. We obtain our books through the library book club scheme and welcome new members.
We are
currently reading ‘The Hitchhikers Guide

A concentrated one day seminar will be held
at Bawdeswell Village Hall. It is designed for those who have mastered the

you can get the latest information about our activities
http://www.projectbawdeswell.org.uk/BAG/BAG.htm
BAG is looking
for more
volunteer helpers and committee members. For the committee we need ideas,
especially from parents so it’s just an hour or two one evening every few
weeks. For helpers at their events the volunteers only need to give the odd
afternoon during school holiday times. All checks and training are paid for. We
appreciate that a number of residents who would otherwise volunteer are being
put off by the requirement for a CRB check but it is a requirement of all the
bodies to whom we have applied or will apply to for funds.
Please contact
our co-ordinator on 01362 688749 if you can spare an afternoon or two or you can
download a volunteers’ form from their website.

BAWDESWELL PLOUGHING SOCIETY
Steve Fraingham has again had a successful Autumn with his ploughing.
He won the Classic Class and was champion of the field at Holt in late September. On Sunday October 5th he travelled to Sudbury and won the Classic Class and has qualified to plough in the British Nationals next October. The following weekend his family travelled with him to Marden in Kent where he competed in this year’s British Nationals. He is still waiting for the score sheets to know his placing.
As he had already qualified for next year, he volunteered to Steward at the Norfolk Ploughing Society Qualifier at Drayton. The Vintage Class at that match was won by his mate Peter Carman of Cawston who will now plough at the British Nationals next October for the first time.
On Saturday October 25th Steve had booked to plough at Sandringham but had to spectate after a back injury during the week. His Dad David judged the Ferguson Class at Sandringham.
The next day we awoke to heavy rain falling. The Bawdeswell Ploughing Society’s match was still held. Most ploughmen came prepared for a wet day. David was kept busy pulling vehicles on and off the field. The rain managed to stop around midday enabling the ploughmen to complete their plots in the dry. Mr Robert Gurney (Bawdeswell Farms Ltd.) attended on the day and showed a great interest in the ploughing. It is thanks to the Gurney family again that the match was held on their land. Half of the proceeds of the Raffle have been sent to the Travel fund set up by Steve and other ploughmen to help ploughmen who qualify to plough abroad in the World Ploughing Finals next September. The other half has been given to the Garrod family of Roudham to help with travel expenses when taking their young son to a London Hospital. His illness has not yet been diagnosed. The young lad has often attended ploughing matches around this area when his Dad Sean competes, but of late has not been well enough to do so.
On November 2nd Steve ploughed at Swanton Morley in the Dereham Farm Machinery Club match . He again won his class. David judged the Reversible class that day.
Both David and Steve ploughed at Kirton in Suffolk on November 9th. Steve came 2nd, he has yet to win his class at Kirton, his mate Mike Childerly from Suffolk was the winner. Steve beat him at Sudbury in the qualifier for the British Nationals. David ploughed with a Ferguson tractor and plough owned by Tom Wells, the organiser of the Kirton match, a mate of Steve and David’s. Tom is also a keen ploughman and travels to some of the matches in Norfolk including Bawdeswell.
Ploughing Society recordings of the Kirton matches are always available in mid January and are interesting to watch. Peter Carman of Cawston came 2nd in the Vintage Mounted Class.
Most of the ploughing matches in this area have finished. Norfolk Ploughing Society are staging a member’s fun day on Sunday November 16th at Skeyton and another, open to all ploughmen, soon after Christmas.
BAWDESWELL
PARISH COUNCIL – EXTRACT OF MINUTES OF MEETING HELD ON 3 NOVEMBER
Present: Councillors Shannon, Beane, Cockburn, Kirby, Mallen,
Mr G Bambridge
(GB), C Boer and 3 parishioners
Apologies:
Councillors Mason and Lilwall
Visit by Breckland Officials to Discuss the
Introduction of the Community Car Scheme – It was confirmed that Bawdeswell would be the pilot for the new
scheme and the PC now needed to provide its share of the practical and financial
support, as well as cooperation of parishioners, to get the scheme up and
running. Breckland’s
role in the CCS would include the payment of a mileage contribution and the
extra cost of enhanced CRB, medical checks for drivers and public liability
insure, assist with marketing and promoting the scheme, and provide the
necessary training for drivers/co-coordinators. While a coordinator for the
scheme had been found it was agreed that a deputy was necessary to cover
absences, sickness etc and the earlier list of volunteer drivers was considered
to be out of date the Clerk commissioned to send a letter to all parishioners
and the PC urged volunteers to come forward.
The PC expressed its broad agreement with the Breckland draft CCS
contract but those areas that had been queried would be clarified by Breckland
and the Chairman to sign the contract at the appropriate time.
Matters Arising not Covered Elsewhere on the Agenda
Transport Questionnaire – Clerk confirmed that the questionnaire had been
circulated to all parishioners and that there had been a good response, PC
urged those who had not filled it in yet to do so and return by the 28 Nov.
Highways Outstanding Work – NCC had confirmed that the speed reactive sign had
been connected and the ‘Village Only’ sign on the A1067 would be erected within
in the next few weeks. An official would
be inspecting the potholes reported to ensure that all had been repaired.
Community Speedwatch Scheme – Clerk confirmed that 5 of the 6 volunteers
required for the scheme had been found, but it was proving difficult to recruit
the final team member, Clerk commissioned to circulate to all parishioners an amended
advert seeking the remaining volunteer.
Parking within the Village – Concerns expressed again about incidents of
parking congestion and parking on pavements/roads within the village. A disabled vehicle was witnessed having
difficulty coming out of the exit of
Flytipping in the Village – Clerk had received photographic evidence of illegal fly-tipping on
the land behind

Gill opened the meeting and introduced our guest speaker, Richard Wright. Richard kept us entertained and interested for the next hour as he spoke of his life as a Norfolk farmer and explained how, a few years ago, he and his family started what is now a going concern called Flame & Flowers – Botanical Oil Lamps, from their house near Loddon.
On tables in front of Richard were 20 to 25 attractive bottles of various shapes and sizes containing dried flowers and lamp oil. The colours were really beautiful and as he spoke Richard showed us how this was done.
He inserted a layer of crystals into a tall slim bottle and then put heads of dried flowers, scraps of fern, an ear of wheat, or oats etc. into the bottle, gently pressing them down one at a time. Then he filled the bottle with lamp oil, put in a wick and lit it. Most effective.
Still busy with seasonal work on the farm, Richard has a very full life. Selling these oil lamps from farm gate to craft fairs, he has progressed to trade fairs and deals with orders from overseas. We could have listened to him for another hour.
After the break Gill told us of forthcoming events and Margaret read last month’s Minutes. The ‘Piggy exhibit’ was won by Carol with Beryl second. Margaret won the raffle.
No meeting in December but we look forward to our Christmas Dinner at the King’s Arms, Reepham. Our January meeting will be on Monday 12th , when Earnie Richards will talk to us about West Side Story. Hope to see you all.

REEPHAM
& DISTRICT ROTARY
A final total of £2770 was raised at the art
tent at the Aylsham Show. Although, less pictures were sold it was still a record.
The club recently held an ‘Elvis night’ at
Reepham High School. The attendance was slightly disappointing but it raised
£150 for Rotary charities.
Members have decided to donate £250 to the
‘Water Aid’ charity and a further £540 for the acquisition of aqua boxes.
Wives and members recently attended a wine
tasting evening, organised by president David Baxter.
His brother in law brought along several ‘interesting samples’.
Members
have agreed to erect the Christmas trees in Reepham market place again this
year and are also assisting with the ‘Christmas in Reepham’ on Wednesday 3rd
December.

Norfolk
Wildlife Trust All I want for Christmas…
Have you got a stash of photographs of Norfolk’s wildlife that you wish you could share with a wider audience? Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s online photo gallery is the place to view and share such images and is always keen for new submissions!
The photo gallery is part of the Trust’s website. Anyone can submit an image to the gallery, provided that the subject matter is Norfolk’s wildlife or wild places and on the understanding that Norfolk Wildlife Trust can use the image free of charge. This means that your images could be used in magazines, leaflets or posters to promote Norfolk’s wonderful wildlife and the work of the Trust. You will always be credited as the photographer.
Since the gallery was launched in August 2007, over 1,500 images have been submitted, providing a fascinating glimpse of our wildlife. If you would like to add to this number, all you need is internet access and a way of loading your photos onto a computer. The easiest way is with a digital camera but photographs can be also be loaded using a scanner. If you do not have your own computer then try your public library.
To view the gallery or to submit an image, visit www.norfolkwildlifetrust.org.uk/naturalconnections and click on the Wildlife Photo Gallery link. So add that digital camera to your Christmas list and get out there and get snapping – it could be the start of a whole new hobby!
WENSUM VALLEY BIRDWATCHING SOCIETY
At our last indoor meeting of the year Photographer Tim Loseby presented ‘A Bird Photographers Garden’. Tim lived in Kent for a number of years before moving to North Norfolk but his talk was centred on his, wildlife friendly, Kent garden.
The second half of the talk (after tea and biscuits and me winning the raffle!) revisited many of the same species as fledglings, showing the different ways plumage changes as a bird matures.
Field Trip: Back again to North Norfolk. We started the day with 16 members at Choseley Barns near Titchwell where we saw tree sparrows, brambling and corn bunting. Then, in improving weather, on to Titchwell where there was a good selection of waders including a purple sandpiper. After lunch on to Holkham, Lady Ann’s Drive, and the Jordan Hide. Then, in the setting sun, a walk along the beach of the largest coastal nature reserve in Britain and the best beach in Europe.
Dates for the diary: December is time
for seasonal shopping and
our Christmas bash at Weston Longville Village Hall on the 11th,
start at 7.30 pm.
So on behalf of the Society I wish you all a happy Christmas and a brilliant new year.

BENEFICE NEWS & EVENTS
You will find enclosed with this month’s magazine a Christmas card from the Benefice with a list of all the services available in all 6 churches. Do please come along to any of the churches – you will be sure of a warm welcome wherever you go.
The Rector has received a letter from the Chancellor of the Diocese of Norwich reminding him of the regulations which apply to our churchyards. The regulations are displayed on the church or churchyard noticeboards, if you want to check them. The letter also said, please do not introduce any extra monument, urn, or anything into the churchyard without getting the Chancellor’s permission (maybe through the Rector|). If you are in any doubt about any of the rules please read the notice or contact the Rector on 01603 872381.
At the January One More Step service on 11th at Bawdeswell the preacher will be the Archdeacon Martin Gray as part of his farewell to the Benefice prior to his retirement in February. This service will be followed by coffee at the village hall and an opportunity to view the artwork and poetry done by the Rector during his Sabbatical. At 12.30 there will be a bring and share lunch to which all are welcome. To make organisation easier, each parish is asked to repeat what they brought to the November lunch at Lyng.
There are quite a few events on in December. We look forward to seeing you at some of them and wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

ST.THOMAS’ CHURCH, FOXLEY
The P.C.C. met at Glebe House courtesy of Tony & Christine Rushbrook on the 4th. November.
We discussed which charities to support this year as we usually do as Christmas approaches. In view of the perils faced by our Servicemen in Iraq, Afghanistan & elsewhere in this disordered world, we decided to give half of our Christmas Collections to the Royal British Legion for their work with those left disabled by conflict & half to that very worthwhile charity East Anglian Childrens’ Hospices.
Although we are committed to helping charities, we face, of course, big demands on our funds through our responsibility for the church building. Dr. Rushbrook had assessed our priorities with reference to the suggestions of our architect in his latest
5-Yearly Survey. From our own Building Fund, which we have accumulated gradually since our last project – refurbishing the interior woodwork - & with as much Grant money as we can wheedle out of various charities, not forgetting the generosity & goodwill of local people, Tony was confident that we can ensure the future of St. Thomas’ and our Christian witness here in Foxley.
The
Secretary, having received information about several courses, lectures and the
like, we fell to discussing the need to publicise
them locally and, indeed, our own activities. We decided to erect a proper
notice board in the churchyard, I have to say
something we meant to do years ago, & also a more adequate board within the
church than our present method – using the back of a pew! Research is also to
be carried out to provide better lighting in the churchyard.
Obviously we must plan some fund – raising events next year! We hope to hold a mini “Open Gardens” at Glebe House & Foxley Lodge on 21st. June; the two “Old Rectories” are conveniently close to each other in Old Fakenham Road! We are also expecting a Talk by the Head Gardener at Salle Park early in May. Does anyone have any fresh, new & inventive ideas?
We have three important Services to look forward to:-
30th. November at 10-30 a.m., Advent Sunday. A Service for the whole Benefice.
21st. December at 4-30 p.m. A Carol Service by Candle-light.
24th. December at 11-30 p.m. Midnight Holy Communion, always a very special experience.

We much enjoyed Bishop James visit to our village on 10th November. He met a cross section of the population and visited the school. In the evening he met the Benefice churchwardens and Benefice Ministry Group in our church.
On Sunday 16th November he returned to attend our church services, including Bawdeswell’s family GiG, which was well attended. Thank you.
Installation is now complete. We look forward to Dr Gerald Gifford’s demonstration concert on Sunday 14th December at 4pm – a demonstration of the new digital organ’s capabilities. The Programme is on the next page.
We hope you will come along.
The organ will be dedicated next May by the Bishop of Norwich.
On Sunday 7th December at 4.00 pm the Friends of Bawdeswell Church have arranged their annual Christmas Concert, including the choir Iceni this year.
On Sunday 21st December at 10.30 we will have our Carol Service, an opportunity to bring all the family to sing your favourite carols and to see the children’s Nativity Play.
On Wednesday 24th December (Christmas Eve) we will have the Blessing of the Crib and Christmas communion service at 9.00 pm. This is earlier than the traditional time for Midnight Mass and we hope it will be just as popular. Everyone is welcome to this celebration of the birth of Jesus.
On Christmas Day (Thursday) at 1030 there will be our now traditional Christmas GiG, a short service especially for the children but at which all ages will find a welcome.
The Post Office is scheduled to open up in the church on Tuesday 6 January, but this date is not yet confirmed.

From the Rector
Dear Everybody, hello again,
Somebody asked me recently: “Why do you call the six parishes you look after FLEBBS?” Well, I have done since I came. I wanted to show that the six parishes Foxley Lyng Elsing Bawdeswell Bylaugh Sparham were all equally important. That’s why the acronym.
When I was little, I remember, I had arguments with my brother about which of us was our parents’ favourite. They wisely said that they didn’t have favourites – and that if we carried on arguing we would be un-favourites.
But there is a tightrope that parents often have to walk at Christmas-time; giving presents that are appropriate to each child, that yet don’t seem unfair. It can take children a little while to learn that their parents love them all equally, even though they are very different. Love isn’t judged by how much money you spend, but children can be quite sharp to notice these things.
Now that we are all worried about spending money, in some ways it makes the job of showing you care for all members of a family equally a bit easier. Everyone has to have less, in financial terms, but they can still deserve the same amount of thought. All equally important.
Christians believe that they are all equally important to God, whatever the work that they have been called to do for Him or for others. He doesn’t love us any more or less for the status or the responsibility we have. We are all his children. We shouldn’t judge the breadth of His love for us by the gifts that we’ve been given. Anyway, those gifts have been given to us to share.
“This Christmas, give the gift that keeps on giving. Love”. That’s a 2008 Church of England car-sticker slogan. And it’s true. The more of it you give, the more of it you have available to give. You can love equally. The price of those gifts doesn’t need to be totted up.
God bless
you. David Head

Auld
Lang Syne
Should
auld acquaintance be forgot
And
never brought to mind?
Should
auld acquaintance be forgot
And auld lang syne?
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!
And
here’s a hand, my trusty friend,
And
give us a hand of thine
We’ll
take a good-will drink tonight
For auld lang syne.
A HAPPY NEW
YEAR TO ALL OUR READERS
