Open Garden, Foxley Our ‘Open Garden’ adventure ended on Tuesday 2nd October in reasonable weather and with a surprising number of visitors, considering the time of year.

Thanks to those garden enthusiasts who visited and to all the friends who were instrumental in helping us to raise £1000. 00. (One thousand pounds!) towards the church window repairs.     John & Mary Fletcher.

This should have appeared in the November magazine.  Sorry Ed.

Bawdeswell Garage  After many years of service to the community, firstly in the village itself where they also sold petrol, diesel, and for a time ran the post office; then subsequently the present premises on the Dereham Road,  Tony and Frankie Shepherd have finally handed over the reins.  Their motto that ‘no job was too big or too small’ was ably carried out by them and their team, and I would like to express my thanks for the many times when we have called on their expertise.

Bob and Debbie Mabee have now taken on the challenge, and we have found their service excellent. Good luck to them.     Hugh Rose.  The Elms, Foxley.

Two 3' Divan Beds each with mattress and headboard.  Good Condition. Can deliver. Offers to 01362-688330    Joan Parfitt

Ploughing    Steve Framlingham has won many trophies this Autumn, the Classic Class at Holkham, Bodham, Colton, Great Melton and Swanton Morley.

On the weekend of October 13th/14th at Crockley Hill he was asked to be a Steward on the Saturday and on the Sunday he competed with 19 others in the Classic Class and was pleased to gain 6th place.  The following Saturday in Cambridgeshire he won his class which means he has qualified to plough in the British Nationals next October which should be staged in Essex.  Steve and David judged on Foulness Island, Essex, at the end of September and also at Woolley near Barnsley, Yorkshire early Nov.

He ploughed at Kirton, Suffolk on November 11th.  He was placed 2nd.

Bawdeswell Ploughing Society match January 13th  Most of the entry forms have now been sent, all those who ploughed in the last match are given  the chance to plough again.  Around 80 entries are expected.  Ploughing starts at 10am and finishes at 3pm.  There will be a charity raffle which will be drawn when ploughing finishes followed by the presentation of trophies.  Spectators are welcome to come and see the skills of ploughing.

Much hard work goes into arranging a ploughing match, trophies have to be ordered, the land measured out into plots and marked, caterer booked and judges organised. When ploughing finishes the judges’ marks have to be totalled up before the winners are announced. Steve and Dena are most grateful to Mr Gurney for allowing the match to take place on his land again this year.     Ruby Framingham

FOXLEY SOCIAL CLUB

                On Wednesday afternoon 31st October the club had Mr. Peter Pavey back again to talk about his song-writing days in Tin Pan Alley.

As before he brought with him tapes, records, discs and sheet music to play to us, plus a wealth of memorabilia of the many famous singers for whom he had written.  Where he had brought no record of a number, then he sung it to us himself with a very fine voice redolent of the Music Hall era.  His behind-the-scenes stories, coupled with his ready humour gave us all an exceptionally enjoyable afternoon.

                The turnout was one of the best that the club had ever had, which was perhaps fitting: all those that had enjoyed the club over these last few years coming to say their goodbyes on the club’s last event.

Healthy Schools

We have just heard we have achieved “Healthy Schools Status” which is excellent news. The children are now discussing our “Food Policy” in their Class and School Council time.

Disability Equality Scheme

We are in the process of writing our Disability Equality Scheme and as required by law, we wish to consult with the community about whether anyone has any ideas of priorities relating to Disability Equality that might be relevant for us to address. Please contact the school if you have any input by the end of November.

Theatre Trips

We are planning to take Year R,1,2 & 3 to the Pantomime Dick Whittington at the Theatre Royal in January, and Year 4, 5 & 6 to a production of Hamlet by the Shakespeare 4 Kidz also at the Theatre Royal in January.  As you can imagine this is a very expensive outing, however, the Friends are contributing to the cost and we are going to use some of our Sponsor Spelling money but we will still need to ask you to contribute £5 per child towards the overall cost.

Forthcoming dates include:-

3rd December –      Visit by the Inspire Discovery Centre to perform to the children. (am)

                                 Cross Country Competition to Costessey High School. (pm)

12th December  -     Pandas Nativity Performance.

A new organ for All Saints Church Bawdeswell

Plans are in hand to replace the organ in Bawdeswell Church with a custom built digital organ.  This will cost in the region of £25,500 which we hope to raise throughthe memorial fund appeal.

When All Saints’ Church was rebuilt after the aircraft crash which destroyed it during the war, the organ from the dower house at Shotesham Hall was moved here and installed in a specially built case which stands in the gallery at the west end of the church.  The case was designed to match the other major wooden furniture, particularly the triple-decker pulpit, the pews and the font cover.

The organ was built by Norman & Beard in 1901.  So it is now just over 100 years old, at the age when it needs a major overhaul, and the PCC took the opportunity to review the musical needs of the church in the parish.

The church can accommodate a congregation of about 100 and, although we do not see so many each week, the church is filled for major services and for weddings and funerals.  We need an organ which can give an effective lead to both small and large congregations.

A digital organ, housed within the existing organ case, will provide a modern answer which will be in keeping with the twentieth century style of the building.  The organ will have digitally generated stops which can be voiced and adjusted to best match the acoustic of the church.  Forward-facing speakers (behind a pipe façade in the organ case) will not be so affected by the ceiling.  Different styles of music can be authentically performed by switching to different voicing.  As digital technology develops, the organ can be further enhanced and updated without burdening the Church financially.

As you know, the Friends of Bawdeswell Church already run fund-raising events for the maintenance of the fabric of the church. The PCC has therefore decided to aim to cover the cost of the new organ from donations and has set up an Organ Fund for this purpose.  If gifts are made in memory of a loved one, their name will be added to a Memorial List displayed on or next to the organ in the gallery, making the organ a living memorial of sound.

Bawdeswell Book Club

The Book Club meets in the Old Workhouse Bar on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30 pm and welcomes new members.  We mostly obtain books from the Library so there is not the expense of buying new books each month.  During November we are reading The Night Watch by Sarah Waters.  This will be discussed at our next meeting on 6 December 2007.  Members are also asked to bring poems for reading/discussion at this meeting.  Over the Christmas break we will be reading Vanity Fair by William Thackeray for discussion at our meeting on 3 January 2008.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Last month we read “On Beauty” by Zadie Smith. The characters of the novel are basically those of 2 academic families with various others from the New England College and town where they are centred.  Many issues are addressed - race, education, obesity, family relationships, religion, honesty and faithfulness.All these issues are contained within the lives of the two families.  One is black and the other has a white father, a fat black mother and therefore mixed race children.  The children of both families are living privileged middle class lives and their situation is compared with other talented but poor black young people.  At one level each family is united within itself but there are various tensions, a lack of knowledge of each other and poor real communication that renders them fairly dysfunctional.The fathers are firm rivals and both are unfaithful husbands.  The only honest relationship that develops is between the two mothers.  Each has a strong commitment to her own family and recognises this shared value in the other.  Each responds to a valuable painting owned by one of them, which becomes a kind of symbol of their unity. The writing is superb – every chapter enthrals as the reader experiences what is being seen, felt, heard and thought by the characters.  An example of this is in Chapter 7 of the first part of the book which relates to a family outing to an outdoor concert and begins with the mother’s emotional response to Mozart’s Requiem, writing at its best, it seems to me.  This is the third novel by this incredibly talented young female writer of whom we will hear more I am sure.
Half Term at the hall in October was enjoyed by many children from Bawdeswell and the surrounding area. Over 30 children had great fun at the Halloween party and we were very impressed at the high standard of the fancy dress costumes.
Those who attended the Disco on Saturday 17 November really enjoyed themselves even though some of their friends didn’t show up.   The music was excellent and we hope to hold another one in 2008.
The Group is looking for additional volunteers/event leaders to help with the scheme during 2008.   Please contact Janet on 688749.
