Bawdeswell Book Club March Book Review

 Eating Peaches, by Tara Heavey

The story centres on Elena, a Dublin solicitor, who, in hopes of a partnership in her law firm, reluctantly agrees to leave her comfortable life and dull-but-nice accountant boyfriend to spend 9 months in a country village developing a new office for her boss. In the real world this situation would probably be as boring as she expects but as we are on Planet Chick Lit, our heroine finds herself in delightfully bijou little cottage surrounded by gorgeous men and eccentric and colourful neighbours who make her jam and give her cute dogs.

Despite our almost universal dislike of the book, it did provoke quite a lot of discussion, although most of us struggled to remember much of the detail.  Completely lacking in depth, it is full of stereotypes and caricatures (do Irish people really say begod?, do all gay men really like George Michael?). There is no development of the characters, the ending is trite and predictable and frankly by then most of us had given up anyway.

In its defence, though, this is not really a book which is written to be challenging or life changing – it is meant to be read in an airport lounge or on a beach and tossed aside without a thought.  It is instantly forgettable reading for the Hello market. But, if you find yourself, as I did, confined to bed with flu, having read every other thing in the house, including the leaflet in the Lemsip packet, then I recommend this to you as mildly diverting and occasionally amusing.

Or you could always re-read Middlemarch………….
