FOXLEY SOCIAL CLUB
Monthly Speaker 15/2/06
On the usual Wednesday afternoon Foxley Social Club was given a thought-provoking and enlightening lecture by Mr. John Fleetwood on the work done by The Woodland Trust for woodland conservation.
His message was stark: Look after the woodlands and trees in general otherwise they will be gradually eroded until they are finally lost. There are many plans afoot all over the country for runways, housing estates, road extensions, that would scythe through our woodlands without a second thought, and certainly without any plans for regeneration, if the Woodland Trust and other similar groups were not there to maintain the diminishing woodland areas, and to politically oppose any further encroachment and devastation.
He was, of course, in the main, preaching to the converted. I think that we who live in a rural setting are only too aware of the value of trees---not only to a myriad of wildlife, but as a ‘soft’ backdrop to our environment. Their overall value to the health of the planet of course brooks no argument.
He was particularly pleased with the way that schools have become involved with conservation. Children have been encouraged to gather tree seeds---acorns being a favourite---and planting them in pots, tending them until they are strong enough to plant out. It seems to have caught children’s imagination and interest, which can only be good all round.
